The only way for UCSB students to affordably live in big houses, steps away from the picturesque beach, is to fill them with as many students as possible. Unfortunately, this often means someone has to live in the garage. Converted garages are common in Isla Vista and if you invest your time and effort in the decorations, they can often be the coolest rooms in the house (with the cheapest rent)! Here are some of my best tips:
GET A CARPET. Covering up the gross garage floor is key. Finding a nice carpet will completely transform the space and make it feel more comfortable.
KEEP THE DOOR OPEN DURING THE DAY. The best part about living in the garage is being able to open the doors during the day and transform your space into the sunniest room in the house! It's nice to let the fresh air in and people watch.
ADD BEAN BAGS, CHAIRS, OR A COUCH. The garage usually ends up being a hangout spot, so get a few seating arrangements. Your room will soon be filled with friends and will be home to many game nights.
GET AN AIR PURIFIER, SPACE HEATER, AND DEHUMIDIFIER. The downside of living in the garage is the lack of insulation. Because there are usually no windows, the room can often become stuffy and humid (especially if it close to the beach on Del Playa). A dehumidifier will prevent mold and an air purifier will help the stuffiness. During winter quarter, the garage can get pretty chilly, but a space heater will do the trick!
MAKE IT COLORFUL! Garages usually have the most wall space out of all the bedrooms in the house, so use this to your advantage. Find some colorful posters and decorations to brighten up your space.
